Flash Floods and Storm Drains

Can storm drains prevent flash floods? Learn about it here.

Flash floods have always been a problem, but in recent times, they have had more than catastrophic consequences for multiple communities. Between 2024 and 2025 alone, we have witnessed the devastation of flash flooding in North Carolina, Texas, and Nevada. New York City and other northeast areas have also suffered from notable flash flooding due to all the severe thunderstorms rolling through the country. While stormwater management systems cannot solve all problems, they can solve some. Today, we’re talking about flash floods and storm drains.

What Is Flooding? Floods vs. Flash Floods

Flooding is when normally dry areas become underwater. A flood could be gradual or rapid and its causes could be natural or manmade. For example, a road could flood because of heavy rainfall, or your house could flood because of a burst pipe.

Flash flooding is when the ground cannot absorb the water at the same rate that it, causing massive flooding that accumulates within minutes and involves rapid waterflow. The force of rapidly flowing floodwater that forms within a very short time is what makes it so dangerous. Mountainous, densely-populated, and low-lying areas are at the most risk of dangerous flash flooding.

Do Storm Drains Prevent Flash Floods?

Storm drains cannot always help; they may not be around areas like trickling streams in undeveloped woods, for example. However, they can help prevent flash floods in very built-up areas and suburban areas. Stormwater sewer systems take water that flows from the ground, sidewalks, roads, and parking lots into catch basins, which capture debris before emptying stormwater into an underground stormwater pipe system. These pipes lead to local waterways.

This kind of stormwater management system is designed to take in a maximum amount of water at a maximum speed.

Storm Drains Just One Part of the Picture

Storm drains are just one solution for flash flood prevention. Retention ponds, detention ponds, permeable pavements, and culverts are a few other stormwater management systems that municipalities use to engineer safe, flood-free communities.
