Types of Manholes

Manholes provide access to underground utility systems, including sewer lines, stormwater drains, electrical conduits, and telecommunications cables. Found in roads, sidewalks, and other developed areas, they allow workers to reach infrastructure beneath the surface. Their design varies depending on installation depth, construction material, and the demands of the surrounding environment. Understanding the different types of manholes helps explain how these structures support underground utility networks.

Types of Manholes by Depth

Normal Manholes

Normal manholes serve as standard access structures for underground utility networks. Their design accommodates the requirements of the system they serve, providing an entry point for reaching buried infrastructure.

Shallow Manholes

Shallow manholes are installed where utility lines sit relatively close to the surface, typically at depths of less than 2 meters (6 feet). Their shallow installation makes them suitable for locations where underground infrastructure does not require a deeper access structure.

Deep Manholes

Deep manholes are used when utility systems are located farther below ground. Their greater depth makes structural stability and safe access particularly important considerations during design and construction.

Types of Manholes by Construction Material

The material used to construct a manhole affects its weight, durability, installation requirements, and resistance to environmental conditions. Common options include precast concrete, plastic, and fiberglass.

Precast Concrete Manholes

Manufactured in a controlled factory environment, precast concrete manholes are transported to the site for assembly. This approach promotes consistent quality and can simplify installation. Concrete’s strength and ability to withstand heavy loads make it a suitable choice for roads and other high-traffic areas. It also offers resistance to corrosion.

Plastic Manholes

Plastic manholes, particularly those made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), offer a lightweight alternative to concrete. They are easier to transport and install, while their resistance to chemicals, cracking, corrosion, and impact makes them useful in environments where conventional materials may face greater wear.

Fiberglass Manholes

Fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) manholes are designed for applications where corrosion resistance and low weight are priorities. They perform well in environments exposed to wastewater and harsh chemicals. Fiberglass also resists impact and ultraviolet radiation, helping maintain its condition over time.
