Keep These Things Out of Storm Drains

Jet Blast Storm Drain Cleaning in Queen Anne, MD

These common things can cause major harm to local waterways.

Storms drains might not seem like the most interesting topic, but they are something we need to be more grateful for. They keep our homes, businesses, and roads from flooding and completely destroying our communities. It might seem dramatic, but it’s true. The problem is that contaminated storm drains can pollute local waterways, and that contamination can happen because of people failing to treat them well. Storm drains are for rain; keep these things out of storm drains to make your community a better place.

Fall Leaves

You can do a lot with fall leaves. It isn’t unlikely that some fall leaves will drift into the catch basins, but the more leaves that enter the storm drain system, the more damage it does to local waterways. Fall leaves can change the nature of a waterway by releasing phosphorus and other nutrients, and cause algae blooms.

Chemicals

Naturally, chemicals are not so healthy for the environment or wildlife. Toxic chemicals include car fluids, processed drinks, pesticides, cleaning supplies, and so much more. If you aren’t sure how to dispose of certain chemicals, look it up. Never throw chemicals into a storm drain or a lawn.

Garbage

Not even the ocean can handle loads of garbage well. Garbage like food waste, plastic bags, plastic cartons, metal cans, and paper boxes do not belong in any body of water. It will not only harm the health of the water, but can severely injure and even destroy wildlife. Don’t be lazy; throw garbage in the garbage can.

Pet Waste

Pet waste can also have toxic nutrients that will cause harmful pollutants to grow in local rivers, estuaries, etc. Even pet waste left to sit in lawns and on pavements can contaminate the landscape and attract rats. Properly dispose of all pet waste.

Yard Waste

Yard waste can include chemicals like fertilizer, weed killer, pesticide, organic matter like grass clippings, fall leaves (mentioned earlier), and more.
