How to Prevent Sewage Overflow

pollution in water

Wastewater spills are preventable! Here’s how Jet Blast Inc. can help.

On August 16, 2025, an unexpected surge in wastewater intake caused around 6,200 gallons of untreated wastewater to overflow onto the streets of Anacostia in Northeast Washington, D.C., and into the Anacostia River. Crews were already repairing a part of the Anacostia Sewer Force Main that had been damaged in July. While a major cleanup has already taken place and repairs continue again, it’s easy to wonder how to prevent sewage overflow in the first place. Is it possible?

Common Causes of Sewage Overflows

Yes, it is possible. However, the first step in prevention is understanding what the cause is. A wastewater overflow from a sewer main can happen because of any of these reasons:

  • Damaged sewer lines: As exemplified in Washington, D.C., a sewer line can have an overflow if damage is already present. This damage can occur due to strong forces, tree roots, or old age.
  • Excessive rainfall: If lots of rain falls into the wastewater system, the pipes may not be able to contain the amount of water flowing through it and overflow. This problem is more likely to happen to a combined sewer system.
  • Clogged sewer lines: The wastewater management system can also overflow if it becomes clogged. A clog can form from any number of contaminants, but grease and oil will clog the system faster than other matter.

Preventing Sewage Overflow

Problems can happen. However, the best ways to prevent sewage overflow include the following practices:

  • Routine inspections can catch small damages quickly before they become huge problems
  • Routine cleaning will prevent clogs and can even do away with tree roots
  • Ongoing monitoring to watch the sewer design’s effectiveness
  • Actively seeing how to improve and implementing upgrades if the sewer system fails to carry meet demands
